Botulinum toxin treatments
Botulinum toxin is a natural, purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It was used for the first time in plastic surgery in the eighties of the last century. It is mainly indicated for the correction of facial wrinkles and for the hyperhidrosis treatment. Botulinum toxin (Azzalure, Xeonim, Botox, Bocouture) inhibits the conduction of nerve impulses to the muscle cells, so that the facial muscles are cannot contract and the skin is not wrinkling. It prevents the formation of new mimic wrinkles and deepening of existing ones. The effect occurs only within the muscles where the toxin was injected. Clinical studies as well as patients experience confirm the effectiveness and safety of the botulinum toxin.
The procedure involves intramuscular or intradermal injection of botulinum toxin in a few places depending on the treated area. During consultations, the specialist visually assesses the skin thickness and the depth of wrinkles. These characteristics determine: the toxin dose, the number of sessions needed, the intervals between sessions, and injection sites. This examination is crucial because the face of each patient has different features as well as specific interactions between the muscles. Therefore, it is very important to be treated by a highly experienced specialist.
The botulinum toxin treatment can be performed multiple times. Botox itself is regarded as a very safe preparation. If the results of the therapy fulfill the patient’s expectations, it can be repeated after a few months. The patient may also decide to undertake another treatment, which would enhance the botulinum toxin effects.
Botulinum toxin is used in the treatment of:
- glabellar and lion wrinkles,
- transverse forehead wrinkles,
- wrinkles around the eyes (“crow’s feet”),
- smoker’s lines,
- drooping mouth corners,
- drooping tip of the nose,
- gnashing of teeth – the rumen muscle,
- migraine.
The botulinum toxin application (in the indications listed above) may be the only form of the therapy or may complement other treatments. The decision depends on the patient age and the skin type. First effects occur 14 days after the toxin injection and the final results are visible after 30 days. The effects are maintained for a period of 2 to 8 months. The time is largely dependable on the strength of the affected muscles and the area of injection.
